You could buy investment property; houses or commercial buildings or you could invest in REITs. The real estate market isn’t done falling so be careful on your choices.

That is the only way to make money in real estate is to buy one, then sell after 5 or 7 years. Renting it is just to let the time pass by and when you are ready to sell, sell it. Or Rent it for as long as the loan close, then sell it, you will get the lumpsum down payment plus the revenue minus the money for fixing it. (for sure). Get a foreclosed home now when you have the money for down payment available (or cash) and then call yourself an investor.

If you mean strictly ‘invest’ in real estate, then besides owning a property, you can invest in real estate investment trust, these are like mutual fund, and they pay very high dividend (by law a large portion of income have to be paid out to the owners/shareholders of the trust)
If we broaden the definition of ‘investing in real estate’, we can include things like wholesaling, bird dogging, becoming a R.E. sales/agent, home repairs, etc. There’s lots of ways of making money in R.E.
